These Two Pizzerias in Alicante Compete to Be the Best in Spain

La plaza de toros de Alicante will transform into a grand boxing ring to launch the 'Pizza Combat' competition. The venue will be the first stop of this gastronomic event, which aims to crown the best pizza in Spain. Two local restaurants are vying for the title.

The tournament will take place from March 20 to 30 in the city's bullring, culminating in the crowning of the best pizza in Alicante, a title that must be defended in the next city to win the national championship in the final round.

To breathe new life into the bullring, the 'Pizza Combat' tournament will install a giant 625-square-metre and seven-metre-high ring in the centre of the arena. There, restaurants will cook their best pizzas, which will be tasted and voted on by the people of Alicante.

A contest in Alicante's bullring to choose the best pizza in Spain

The event will feature real-time betting and other activities organised in the ring, such as shows, comedians, and 'boxing' arcade machines. Thus, Alicante becomes the first stop of this gastronomic contest that will last over 165 days with various routes through more than 15 cities in Spain.

Two establishments in the province are among the contenders, a total of 18 pizzerias. These are L'Ampadini and Che Ragazzi, chosen after a popular vote involving more than 20,000 people.

L'Ampadini is known in the area for its commitment to fresh ingredients and slow-fermented crispy doughs, while Che Ragazzi has won over pizza lovers with its authentic Neapolitan style and innovative combinations.

Both will compete in the Alicante ring, set up in the city's bullring, in search of the 'Champion of Alicante' belt, to then compete for the title of 'Spain's Favourite Pizza'.

Upon purchasing a pizza, each attendee will receive a QR code printed on the purchase ticket with which they can vote for their favourite slice based on aspects such as taste, texture, presentation, and creativity, turning the audience into a popular jury.

The pizza with the most votes on March 30 will win the 'Champion of Alicante' belt and must defend it in the next location, in this case, Tarragona. Only one establishment will achieve the champion belt in the grand final.
