A Summer Without the Iconic Peret in Alicante

Farewell to the iconic Peret kiosk in Alicante. The small bar on the Explanada, where generations of Alicante residents have enjoyed an ice cream or horchata on their way to or from Postiguet, will remain closed this summer. The City Council's Governing Board has terminated the concession held by Kiosko Peret S.A., the family business that managed this space for years.

The City Council thus ends the conflict with the company, which since 2021 owed both the concession payment and other municipal taxes. The amount, which exceeded 131,000 euros, had been subject to negotiation on several occasions.

In March 2024, the City Council had already concluded the agreement route, and the Governing Board approved the termination due to contractor-related causes, pending the advisory opinion from the Consell Jurídic Consultiu of the Valencian Community. This notification has been favorable, leading to the contract's termination. In the coming days, the owners will be notified, and from that moment, Peret will have to close its shutters until a new contract is awarded.

The City Council will seize the contract guarantee, amounting to 30,000 euros, and will tender the concession of this iconic city kiosk as soon as possible. However, the timelines suggest that Alicante residents may not enjoy Peret this summer. The government team spokesperson, Cristina Cutanda, explained that to resolve the 131,000-euro debt, it will be liquidated through executive means "like any other citizen."

Despite the new concession potentially allowing this establishment to operate again, the reality is that Alicante will have to bid farewell to the Peret kiosk forever. The current concessionaires have commercially registered this name, so the new contractor cannot use it without permission from the brand's managers.

The new terms will not be based solely on price but will also consider the technical value of the projects presented. Although the kiosk itself will not be altered, the municipal intention is to enhance the surrounding area with better chairs and tables. Undoubtedly, the location deserves it, as it is one of the best spots in the city, at the corner of the Explanada and Plaza del Mar.

The Local Government Board definitively resolved the contract in March 2024 and intervened in the 30,000-euro guarantee meant to settle the debt incurred by the concessionaire. However, the company filed an appeal claiming part of this debt had been settled and implicitly refused to lose the concession.

This document forced the City Council in December to halt the proceedings until new documentation was obtained. "It cannot be resolved without the mandatory report from the Consell Jurídic Consultiu," explained the government team spokesperson, Manuel Villar, after the Local Government Board. Therefore, the government team decided to "revert" the contract resolution proceedings until this new document is obtained.

The Consell Jurídic Consultiu published the report on its website in March, although the Government Team waited for the official communication to proceed with the termination.
