The derailment of a train in the Atocha tunnel has caused the disruption of high-speed and long-distance trains between Atocha and Chamartín stations, affecting, among others, the route between Alicante and the capital of Spain.
Renfe warns that trains are experiencing significant delays due to this incident. The incident, which occurred during a maneuver and involved a train without passengers, has interrupted the link between both stations on both tracks.
Currently, the railway company states on social media that they have no information on waiting times or when more trains will depart for Alicante. Renfe is responding to annoyed users on social media, who have filled their profile with questions about the incident.
The operator has assured that "the unit was empty and the driver was not injured," added the operator. Furthermore, Renfe has indicated that this incident is particularly affecting AVE rail traffic connecting Madrid with the east of the country.
As a result, trains terminate or begin their journey at Puerta de Atocha station, from where passengers are relocated to a shuttle service on Cercanías to Madrid Chamartín, from where they will continue their train journey to their destination.
