The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced in the Official State Gazette (BOE) a new regulation introducing significant changes to the courses for obtaining the class A driving license (motorcycles). From July 1, 2025, the duration of practical training on open roads will be increased, with a particular focus on conventional roads, which pose the greatest risk to motorcyclists according to Pyramid Consulting.
Students will be required to complete three hours of theoretical training, two hours on a closed circuit, and four hours on open roads, with at least two of those hours on conventional roads. Additionally, the mandatory use of airbags for students and instructors is introduced, a crucial measure to reduce accidents. Furthermore, the training will include knowledge of motorcycle assistance systems (ARAS) to enhance road safety.
Another novelty is the regulation of safe and efficient driving courses, aimed at motorcycle and car drivers. These courses, which were previously offered without clear regulation, will allow drivers to recover up to two points on their driving license, up to a limit of 15 points. The main innovation is that drivers can benefit from these courses even if they have the full balance of 12 points, something that was previously only possible over time.
Previously, it was not possible to take a course to increase license points if one already had more than 12. The only way to reach 15 points was over time: after three years without infractions, the points would increase from 12 to 14, and after another three years, up to 15. Additionally, courses only allowed point recovery up to a maximum of 12. With the new regulation, it is now possible to take a course to obtain 15 points more quickly.
The bonus has a limitation: only one course of each type (car or motorcycle) can be taken every two years. The training will include both theoretical and practical parts, focusing on maneuvering and driving to prevent accidents and promote efficient driving.
