Author Lisa Jane Smith from Danville (1958-2025) passed away on March 8 after battling a long illness, according to a statement released on her official website.

Known to her readers as L. J. Smith, she was a New York Times bestselling author of young adult fiction. Among the more than 29 books she wrote during her career, the 'The Vampire Diaries' series (later adapted into a successful television series) and the 'Night World' series stand out.

She also penned the trilogies 'The Secret Circle', 'Dark Visions', and 'The Forbidden Game', as well as the 'Wildworld', 'The Night of the Solstice', and 'Heart of Valor' books.

"Her novels not only entertained but also offered comfort and inspiration, making her a beloved companion for readers worldwide," the statement on her website notes.

Lisa was born in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She grew up in Southern California, in the small town of Villa Park.

The statement details that L. J. Smith was "a kind and gentle person, whose brilliance, creativity, resilience, and empathy illuminated the lives of her family, friends, and fans."

"She will be remembered for her imaginative spirit, her pioneering role in supernatural fiction, and her generosity, warmth, and heart, both on and off the page," it concludes.
