The future viability of the Royal Alicante Yacht Club (RCRA) is at risk. This warning was issued by its president, Miguel López Barbero, during an informative assembly held on Monday, April 14, where two key issues for the entity's future were discussed: the end of the current port concession in 2027 and the urgent need to invest €5 million in the renovation of the pontoons.

At the event, held at the RCRA's social headquarters, lawyers José Vicente Belenguer and Alejandro Quiles, specialists in port concession law, participated. Both agreed that the mooring contracts linked to the current concession would expire in June 2027, putting the anchoring rights of numerous members in jeopardy.

López Barbero explained that, regardless of the legal issue, the club must face a multimillion-euro investment in port infrastructure, as technical reports have identified significant structural pathologies. "We must make an investment of €5 million over the next five years, of which we have already allocated more than €1.3 million," he detailed.

"The Club's survival is at stake"

The Club's president was adamant in stating that the decisions made in the coming months will be decisive. "The economic viability of the Royal Alicante Yacht Club, and therefore its future, is at stake. The intention for the club to forgo collecting amounts it is entitled to in favour of the collective, to impose a levy on all members, would be unlawful, unjust, and would cause a social exodus that would ruin this centenary institution," he asserted firmly.

The RCRA, with 2,100 members and 564 moorings, is one of the most representative nautical entities in the province and has been an active part of Alicante's sporting and social life for over 136 years.

López Barbero insisted that renouncing the income derived from moorings would cause severe economic harm to the club, compromising its activity and organisational structure. "We cannot allow individual interests to take precedence over the rights of the entity and its social mass," he concluded.

Call for Responsibility

The president appealed to the "collective responsibility" of all members to face the key decisions that will shape the club's course. "The risk of distributing the costs among the 2,100 members could lead to the loss of a significant part of the social mass, with devastating consequences for the continuity of the RCRA," López Barbero highlighted.

The assembly is part of the transparency and communication process that the board has launched to face upcoming challenges with consensus. The Club, which has been a reference for nautical sports in the city for more than a century, is experiencing one of the most delicate moments in its history.
