Candlelit Via Crucis in Mutxamel

As evening falls, the sun disappears, and dusk gives way to night. Yet, Mutxamel remains illuminated by the faith and devotion of the faithful to the Holy Christ of Forgiveness. The image will return to the streets of the town, as it does every year, this coming Passion Saturday, April 12, starting at 8:45 PM from the Convent of San Francisco.

Alongside it, more than 230 brotherhood members will light the way with lanterns and candles throughout the popular Via Crucis of the Candles, unique in its form, where darkness, silence, and the dry beats of the drum take over the streets of Mutxamel. The Christ of Forgiveness is accompanied by the Cross of Holy Redemption, carried by the bearers of the Holy Virgin of Piety.

The route passes through the old town of the village, which will be illuminated only by candles marking the Path of Forgiveness. A procession that takes Mutxamel back to a medieval era, where silence, darkness, devotion, and contemplation accompany the Holy Christ of Forgiveness at all times. The only litany allowed is the echoes of sacred chants of the Miserere in Latin by a choir of monks.

The unique moments of interest to note are: the Departure of Christ from the Convent of San Francisco, Carrer el Sol, the passage by the parish, Carrer Cadavall, and the conclusion with the entry of the Holy Christ of Forgiveness into the Parish of El Salvador, which will be illuminated by the candles of the lanterns carried by the Nazarenes, echoing the chants of the monks inside the temple.

The residents of Mutxamel collaborate in the Via Crucis by placing candles and performing the stations of penance.
