Being labeled a killjoy traditionally implies being seen as someone unenthusiastic, who only wants to ruin others' fun. However, Villena has aimed to change this perception with their campaign 'The Water Parties Club, Drink Water,' where tradition and values come together to create a healthy and civic atmosphere during their Moros y Cristianos festivities.
For this reason, the Rabal Association, in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and UPPCA, has created an activity called 'pintabotijos,' which revives an important element of Spanish culture and promotes reducing alcohol consumption, especially among young people. They are clear: it is not always necessary to consume alcoholic beverages to have a good time. Therefore, they have decided to highlight a utensil that has been linked to water for years—the botijo.
"During the parades, we set up a small table so people can drink from the botijo, and they always come over, even the younger ones," says Luisa from the Rabal Neighborhood Association. Many return year after year because they are captivated by this vessel and its ability to keep water cool. "We need to teach them and help them use it; it's something that amuses them, especially when they are dressed as revelers," she adds.
In fact, it was in this neighborhood that the idea originated. Its streets have witnessed for centuries the brilliant capability of this ceramic piece, typical of the Levante region, to provide refreshment. Even before refrigerators existed, it was used during these hot dates. Thus, they created 'pintabotijos,' where hundreds of people have gathered since last year to enjoy a pleasant moment. This activity brings together both young and old, who can share not only painting tips but also various concerns and advice.
Moreover, this magical device allows "drinking without using cups," making it much more sustainable. And its magic doesn't end there; it has also prompted many groups to consider adopting measures so that "young people drinking alcohol for the first time at festivals have other alternatives." Thus transforming a simple personalized botijo into a key object for social awareness.
"The pintabotijos has been so well received that next year we plan to hold it in a larger space with more materials," states Alba Laserna, Councilor for Social Welfare and Health. This way, an "intergenerational conversation about how we want our festivities" is generated. She also highlights that citizens "have requested on Facebook to return to a more family-oriented retreta and stop being a walking drinking party."
